4 Things to Consider Before Picking a Personal Trainer

For a lot of people, an important part of their fitness journey is the decision to get a personal trainer. Some individuals thrive in a group fitness class, some are able to find the motivation to create their own workouts, and others do best with a personal trainer. The great thing about a personal trainer is that your workouts are tailored to you and your body, which means you’ll get more out of it than you could in any other type of workout class. If you’re thinking about finding a personal trainer, here are a few things to consider!

Check their credentials

When it comes to the health of your body, you only want to trust it with a professional. You wouldn’t go to a doctor that didn’t have a degree, so don’t go to a personal trainer that doesn’t have the proper training and credentials. To become certified, a personal trainer has to pass an exam through the American Council of Exercise(ACE), the National Academy of Sports Medicine(NASM), or the National Strength and Conditioning Association(NSCA).

Experience

Being certified is incredibly important, and next on your list of things to check is their experience. A trainer that has successfully worked with clients in the past is a trainer that you can be confident going to. Ask them if you can reach out to clients they’ve worked with in the past, to see what previous clients experiences have been.

Make sure your personalities work together

You could go to the best personal trainer available to you, but if they annoyed you, you’d hate your entire experience. Before you hand over cash, get to know them and spend some time around them to make sure that you like them. Do they prefer to use positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement? Talk to them and get a feel for how they act. Pay them for one session and see how it goes, before signing up long term.

Areas of expertise

What are you hoping to accomplish with this trainer? Do you have an event, such as a wedding, that you’re trying to get in shape for? Do you have a specific part of your body, such as your legs or arms, that you’re hoping to tone up? Shop around until you find a personal trainer that specializes in what your goals are. Trying to hit a new PR on an upcoming 5k? Find a trainer that does a lot of cardio and can get outside and run with you.
